6 GOOD REASONS TO DRINK ROSÉ IN SUMMER

Every summer, clans form between those who drink rosé from June to September and what will tell you that rosé is not really wine. So here are 6 good reasons to drink rosé in summer.

REASON #1: ROSÉ IS REFRESHING

And yes, we had to start with the first argument of this drink: rosé is refreshing. Not only is rosé fresh, it also contains more tannins than its cousin white wine.

The key to a fresh and pleasant rosé is to find the right balance between acidity (also called freshness) and tannins. The latter should be much more subtle than for red wines.

REASON #2: ROSÉ IS A CHALLENGE

Making rosé wine is more difficult than it seems. Making a rosé wine is an art!

Attention, I already hear those at the back of the class telling me that it is a mixture between white and red. So it may be the case in some countries but in France, certainly not (with the exception of champagne) !

Two solutions to make rosé: either red grapes are pressed very quickly to obtain as little colour as possible, or the skin of the grape (which contains the pigments) is macerated in the juice to obtain a stronger and more intense colour.

I invite you to read my article: colour does not make rosé.

REASON 3: ROSÉ GOES WITH EVERYTHING!

All of France produces rosé wine and I can’t believe you can’t find the rosé that suits you. There are so many possible combinations that, for me, when I hear “I don’t like rosé“, it’s as if I hear “I don’t like life/shoes/vegetables”.

Rosés also go well with fish, meat, aperitifs, picnics and much more!

On the other hand, some winegrowers do not hesitate to make their rosés unique works for each vintage, by trying new grape varieties and/or new vinifications.

REASON 4: INTENSE ROSÉS…

Ideal for summer barbecues, Pinot Noir is my favourite intense pink. They give powerful and aromatic wines, with aromas of red fruits and violet.

There are also many Italian (ex. Barolo) or Spanish (ex. Douro or Rioja) rosés in this category. Powerful but very fine rosés.

REASON 5 : … BUT ALSO DELICATE AND FINE ROSÉS

Here we think directly of Provence and Languedoc: light and delicately perfumed rosés.

Be careful not to fall into the trap of “the lighter the rosé, the better“.

This is completely false and leads some estates to “create” completely artificial rosé wines filled with chemicals that are used to lighten the wine (it is often these products that give you horrible headaches from the first glass).

The wine must be clear and limpid but not transparent or almost white.

If you have trouble identifying whether the wine in the bottle is white or rosé, it is better to rest the bottle immediately. It’s rarely a very good sign!

The light rosés will be superb companions for your summer picnics and your cocktail dinners.

REASON 6: GREAT ROSÉ WINES

Finally, don’t forget that you can’t claim to taste a winemaker’s masterpiece by buying a bottle of rosé for 2.50 euros. And yes: good work comes at a price!

Some rosé wines can reach prices ranging from 15-20 euros to really very very expensive (I think of Garrus: about 85 euros).

However, for my part, the wines for which I am sure to please myself are between 10 and 15 euros. I think of Château les Valentines or Château Romanin: a treat for the senses. It is the right balance between freshness and tannin, making wines extremely refreshing to be able to face the heat of summer in all serenity.

There you go! I hope I convinced you with these 6 good reasons to drink rosé in summer.

And which clan do you belong to? Rosé or not rosé?
